Endo-belly is a bloated abdominal area that’s common among people who have endometriosis. Some people claim that their swelling is so severe, it makes them look pregnant.
Megan Billow, DO , a women’s healthcare specialist says that people with endometriosis can have symptoms for many years before they are diagnosed. We’re seeing an increased awareness of endo stomach these days. Patients bring in pictures to document their symptoms.”
What is endo bell?
It is caused by a buildup in the abdominal area of gas and inflammation. This condition usually occurs during or before your period ( womenstruation).
A painful and swollen abdominal area is the main symptom of endo stomach. Constipation, nausea and diarrhea are common gastrointestinal symptoms.
What other diseases look like endo stomach?
Endo stomach can mimic other gastrointestinal conditions such as:
- Celiac Disease.
- Crohn’s disease.
- Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS).
- Ulcerative Colitis.
A diagnostic perspective, thinking about endo stomach as “either/or”, isn’t very helpful. You may have to deal with GI issues that are “both/and”.
“You may have endometriosis and another gastrointestinal disorder, like irritable Bowel Syndrome,” says Dr. Billow. He adds, “It is important that your doctor asks you about your medical background and when symptoms first appear.” This information is crucial to determining the correct diagnosis.
What is the cause of endo-belly?
Endometriosis causes endo belly. Endometriosis is a condition in which cells that are similar to those of the uterus lining grow on other parts of your pelvis or abdomen. These cells, as well as the organs and tissues nearby, become inflamed during your menstrual period.
“Inflammation may cause the swelling that we see with endo stomach,” explains Dr. Billow. Endometriosis can also cause constipation and gas, as well as irritate the intestines. Both processes may be causing the abdominal bulge in endo belly.
Symptoms of Endometriosis also include painful sex, period pain and difficulty getting pregnant.
Endometriosis Pain can also occur in the back, side or chest.
How can I get rid endo stomach?
The majority of people will find relief from endo stomach. If you are still experiencing symptoms after making dietary changes, you should speak to your healthcare provider.
“Medication and surgical treatment are often the most effective options, since they treat the endometriosis that is the root cause of endo stomach,” notes Dr. Billow.
Endo-belly treatment options include:
Dietary Changes
Endometriosis is closely related to inflammation and estrogen: Both are triggered by high levels of estrogen.
An anti inflammatory endometriosis diet focuses on foods that reduce estrogen and inflammation. As an example:
- Fiber helps to remove excess estrogen and prevents constipation, which can worsen the endo stomach. Fruits, vegetables, beans and whole grains are high-fiber foods.
- Healthy fats such as Omega-3, and monounsaturated fatty acids, reduce inflammation. Healthy fats are found in salmon, seeds, nuts and avocados.
- Minerals such as zinc and magnesium help regulate your menstrual cycles and relax your muscles. Try leafy greens and dark chocolate to increase magnesium . Also, nuts, seeds, beans, and legumes are good sources. Foods high in zinc include shellfish, poultry and red meat.
Avoid these foods if you suffer from endometriosis:
- Alcohol.
- Caffeine.
- Fatty meats
- Ultra-processed foods.
- Sugary drinks
FODMAP Diet is another strategy for improving endo stomach. Foods that are known to cause digestion problems, such as FODMAPs, can be avoided. You start by eliminating all FODMAPs. You slowly begin to add food back into your diet.
Dr. Billow suggests working with a nutritionalist to identify foods that worsen endo stomach symptoms. She also suggests using a stool softener daily to prevent constipation.
Medicines
By suppressing estrogen, medications can help treat endometriosis. Two main types of medication are used by healthcare providers:
- Birth Control Pills And intrauterine Devices (IUDs), regulate your menstrual cycles or stop bleeding completely.
- Gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) antagonists block the hormones involved in estrogen production. Elagolix has been approved for the treatment of endometriosis.
You may also be prescribed nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), which reduce inflammation and relieve pain.
The following are some of the most effective ways to reduce your risk.
Surgery is an option if dietary changes or medication don’t work. Dr. Billow says that they use a laparoscopic minimally-invasive approach.
During laparoscopy
- A thin tube with a built-in camera is inserted through a small abdominal incision by your provider.
- Your provider will use small instruments to remove the endometrial (damaged) lesions, guided by computer images.
The surgery may involve removing the uterus, ovaries or part of the bladder or bowel (hysterectomy). The extent of the surgery will depend on how much pain you are experiencing and if want to have a child.
Endometriosis is treated by Dr. Billow to preserve fertility.
Complementary therapies
Other treatments can help relieve your pain and symptoms. Popular therapies include:
- Acupuncture.
- Counseling.
- Physical Therapy.
- Yoga.
How long will it take to get rid of endo stomach?
Endo stomach can last for several days or even weeks. The amount of endometriosis and the extent to which it affects your intestines will determine how long you’ll experience this condition.
Your provider can assist you in finding the best balance between dietary, medical, and complementary treatments. Working together can help you find lasting relief.
