Daniel Shoskes MD, urologist, says that erectile dysfunction is a serious condition. However, there are many myths about it. Men are concerned that sitting on a bicycle seat with a hard surface can lead to ED. They are worried that ED can be caused by diet or lack of sleep, or even simply getting older. They wonder if it’s just them.

1. What prescription medications can I take to treat erectile dysfunction?

Yes. erection may be affected by more than 200 drugs.

2. Can erectile dysfunction be a psychological problem?

Yes. Erectile dysfunction is often caused by psychological factors, either as the sole cause or in part, particularly in young men.

3. Can tight underwear cause erectile dysfunction?

No. Tight underwear does not cause ED.

4. Is erectile dysfunction a part of aging?

Age is a factor that can make erections more difficult. However, age by itself does not prevent you from having sex. Other factors are usually involved. Other factors may be involved, such as diabetes, hypertension and personal habits, like smoking cigarettes.

5. Can a guy get an erection when he wants it?

No. Erections may occur more often in teenage boys. However, as men age, they are less frequent. A man’s level arousal can be affected by hormones in his body, as well as other life changes. A man may need more stimulation to get an erection.

6. Is ED caused by smoking, drinking alcohol or using illegal drugs?

Yes. These substances may cause ED by affecting blood vessels or restricting blood flow.

7. Does it really happen that men don’t experience erectile problems?

No. The majority of men will experience ED. According to studies, up to 52% of men aged between 40 and 70 years old may experience erection problems.

8. Should a man get treatment for recurrent ED?

Yes. If ED is more than 50% of the time, a man should consult a doctor and seek treatment.

9. Can cycling on occasion cause ED?

Some studies have suggested that this is a controversial issue. They suggest that men who ride their bikes a lot could be experiencing erection problems. Moderate cycling does not have an effect on erectile function. However, men should take frequent breaks while cycling long distances. Bicycling can be more comfortable for men if they have a bike and seat that are ergonomically designed to fit their body.

10. Can ED affect a man’s sexual partner?

Yes. If impotence is not treated, both partners may suffer. Denial and failure to communicate can lead to anxiety and depression for both partners.
